  1. 1741-1827. American artist, head of a large
  2. family of painters. His portraits of leading
  3. figures in the Revolutionary War include the
  4. earliest known portrait of George Washington
  5. 1772. Peale was also a naturalist, interested
  6. in paleontology and taxidermy, and an
  7. inventor. Five of Peale's 17 children also
  8. became painters - Titian Peale (1799-1885),
  9. animal painter; Rubens Peale (1784-1865),
  10. still-life painter; Raphaelle Peale
  11. (1774-1825), still-life and portrait painter;
  12. Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), portrait and
  13. historical painter; and Franklin Peale
  14. (1795-1890), natural history painter. His
  15. brother James Peale (1749-1831) and James's
  16. daughters were portrait painters and
  17. miniaturists.
